Emilio Isgrò, born 1937, lives and works in Milan, Italy

“A conceptual artist and painter – but also a poet, writer, playwright and director – Emilio Isgrò created his first Cancellature (Deletions) in 1964. These consist of books and encyclopedias in which words are completely covered in black marks. In the 1960s he was associated with the Poesia Visiva (Visual Poetry) movement and with Conceptual Art. Recent activities include a retrospective the Luigi Pecci Centre for Contemporary Art in Prato (2008) and solo exhibition at the Galleria Nazionale di Arte Moderna in Rome. Isgrò’s work has also been exhibited at the Centre Pompidou and PS 1/MOMA.”
