Shane Tolbert, born in Corsicana, TX in 1985 and currently lives and works in Abiquiu, NM

“The plastic bag paintings reflect an interest in cataloging objects from daily life that I meet with minimal intervention. The series started after relocating to Abiquiu, NM in an attempt to undermine traditional opinions of the region as bucolic. The West offers a clarity in it’s horizontality to make visible what I never saw working in Houston. At peak production of 100 billion annually, single use plastic bags are a petrochemical artifact of an American consumer boom currently being phased out. The production scale alone warrants a place in our cosmology. The narrative of the high desert landscape is built on erosion, geology and throw away culture. The paintings elevate the plastic bags into focus by stripping the ink of their corporate branding. The graphics then sink behind the dominant gestures of each painting.”
